Hi there! My name is Teresa and I’m delighted to share my passion for photography with you. I’ve lived in Calgary, Alberta for 15 years and while I enjoy my day job of dental assisting, whenever possible, my camera and I escape the city in search of new places to explore.

I was five years old when our family moved to Dawson Creek, B.C., to follow my dad’s dream of farming. I shared his love of rural life and nature, always happiest when riding my horse, Belle. Preserving these memories with my first camera, a little Kodak Instamatic, I began a journey of discovery, starting with an assortment of blurry photos of our dog, many kittens and, of course, Belle. My favourite spot to go riding was along the Kiskatinaw River that was just down the road.

I was thrilled when my high school teacher, Miss Teena, set up a darkroom in the staff bathroom and taught us how to develop film and print the photos. Watching the black and white images appear in the tray was magical to me. I remember my first camera was a Pentax ME Super..

My focus changed after graduating to training as a dental assistant and then finding a job. I was working in Fort St John, when I saw an ad for a photography school in Victoria, B.C. I needed to do something creative and this was the sign that I needed. In 1990, I quit my job and enrolled in the Western Academy of Photography.

There was so much to learn about the history and art of taking photos. I enjoyed it all! My favorite thing was being in their professional lab printing pictures. My early influences were Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke-White and Dorothea Lange. I also realized that I wasn’t interested in the business of photography, but in the creative side.

I found myself working as a dental assistant again as I developed my skill as a photographer. I had time to experiment with different styles and subjects. Freeman Patterson and Andre Gallant were some of the photographers I followed. Their use of texture and light were works of art and that inspired me.

With each new through-the-lens discovery and learning to print through Photoshop, I am in awe of the amazing God who inspires me with His creativity in this world. As my relationship with Him grows closer, I am increasingly aware of how my pictures are linked to my faith and the joy I experience through the beauty of His creation.
